(cut scene) from end of ch. 1 “Songs of the Sunset: Serenade”

Though it had no face behind it, but few eyeholes, the myriad star consciousnesses stared from the discarded mask. Pallis pinched the edge of it, held it up to the light. Blood dripped from the thorns that jut out the wearer’s side, onto his fingers. A disapproving susurrus sent a tremor through the thorns. They must have known how they’d lost. No, they think this is loss. They haven’t begun to know, not yet.

He turned the mask to face him. “You said you’d take me back.” Pallis smiled. “Well, I’m coming. For all of you.”

the Laetha flashed a wicked smile, raised her gun and sighted down the barrel.

With that, Pallis flung the mask, up and away. the Laetha fired: a blaze of plumes engulfed the mask of frozen starfire and bleeding thorns, and all dissolved in a cloud of glitter.

To the Queen Ophelia,

We know we said we wanted Pallis. He and the Firebird are wreaking havoc. Take him and his army back into the West and we won’t break any more treaties.

Signed,
the Constellar

To the Constellar,

Alice Androids manufactured with the directive to nullify the violence of Laetha shards have been dispatched accordingly.

Signed,
the Ophelia, Queen of Western Faery

WE WERE GIVEN TO UNDERSTAND YOUR ALICES WOULD NOT MAKE THINGS WORSE FOR THE STARS. WHAT IS THIS.

To the Constellar,

What directive I gave the Alice Androids was exactly as I stated. What command I gave them upon their dispatch was another matter. Whoopsie?

Signed,
the Ophelia, Queen of Western Faery
